INTRODUCTION TO VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual Reality (VR) is not a new technology as its development dates back almost 50 years ago and the scientific community has been working in the field of VR for decades and manage to transform this field into powerful human-computer interface. The advent of powerful computers and graphics packages act as catalyst in “upgrading” this VR technology as one of the powerful interactive media.

The term Virtual Reality (VR) is used by many with different meanings. There are some people whom VR is a specific collection of technologies that is a Head Mounted Display, Glove Input Device and Audio. Some other people expand the term to include conventional books, movies or pure fantasy and imagination.

According to Burdea G.C. & Coiffet (2003) in their book with the title “Virtual Reality Technology” defines VR as:

“Virtual reality is a high-end user-computer interface that involves real-time simulations and interactions through multiple sensorial channels. These sensorial modalities are visual, auditory, tactile, smell, and taste.”

VR has many names as listed below:

  • Virtual Environment
  • Artificial Reality
  • Computer Generated Environment
  • Computer Simulated environment
  • Synthetic Environment
  • Spatial Immersion
  • Cyberspace
  • Virtual Worlds
  • Virtual Presence Metaverse

In general, VR applications could be divided into two broad categories:

  • The simulation of real environments such as the interior of a building or a spaceship often with the purpose of training or education.
  • The development of an imagined environment, typically for a game or educational adventure.

A major difference of VR systems is the mode with which they interface to the user. Below are some of the common modes used in VR systems.

  • Window on World Systems (or also known as Desktop VR)
  • Video Mapping
  • Immersive Systems
  • Telepresence
  • Mixed Reality (MR)
  • Non-Immersive VR
